You can enjoy a great time at the Farmers' Markets and Food Festivals coming up in September, taste what’s on offer and come away with bags of fresh, tasty local produce to cook up your own feast at home.
Join in the 10th Anniversary Celebrations at Newcastle Farmers' Market on Friday 3rd September and enter the free draw to win a prize hamper of the new season’s hill lamb, freshly dug carrots, cheese, rosemary focaccia, crunch courgette cake and lots more - or a voucher to spend at the Farmers' Market - you can fill in an entry at the Farmers' Markets. Steve Ramshaw will have tasters of a sizzling new celebration sausage and there will be demonstrations about how to prepare and cook the fresh ingredients on sales.
At Berwick Food Festival on 11th and 12th September younger foodies will be able to experience how to enjoy food using all five senses by seeing, touching, tasting, smelling and hearing as they discover the delicious secrets of the hidden local foods and complete a special Taste Adventure Passport with stickers!
Also on 11th September - a bit further down the coast, there's the second Newbiggin Farmers' Market. The market in August was very popular, and Newbiggin Town Council tell us that they are seriously thinking of continuing the market through to Christmas if the September market goes as well.
Alnwick Food Festival is on 18th & 19th September. Buy the best of fresh, local produce in Alnwick Market Place. A particular highlight will be Doddington’s Dairy icecreams, made with cream from cows pastured in the lush meadows of North Northumberland. Adults can savour locally brewed ales at the Beer Festival while children will be able to make their own fresh fruit smoothies and join a tasting tour of the Roots and Shoots Garden.
Meanwhile on Sunday September 19th, up in the hills at Allen Mill in Catton (south of Hexham) at the new Allendale Farmers’ Market , you can buy bread from Allendale Bakery and beer from Allendale brewery plus other specialities like Birdoswald cheese, rare breeds meat and organic vegetables.
It is not all good news though – Northern Dales Farmers’ Markets’ trial farmers market at Teesside Retail Park in Thornaby has been scrapped because they weren’t getting enough customers along, although the nearby Stockton farmers’ market is flourishing.
And Northumberland CC have finally pulled the plug on Ponteland farmers’ market just a couple of months after its 10th anniversary. They are replacing it with a conventional street market to be held on the fourth Friday of the month.
So – do support your local farmers’ market! |
