Newcastle Farmers’ Market’s 10th birthday on Fri 3rd Sept was a great success from a formal opening by the Mayor to cookery demos by Real Food Works to live chickens scratching around under Grey’s Monument. A real tribute to the hard work put in by market manager, Jane Rose, and her colleagues. See photos in our events gallery.

It’s the first one in the North East.

Also on 11th September - a bit further down the coast, there's the second Newbiggin Farmers' Market. The market in August was very popular, and Newbiggin Town Council tell us that they are seriously thinking of continuing the market through to Christmas if the September market goes as well.

Cooking Demos and Hens

Darlington (21st), Ponteland (22nd)

If you fancy some cooking but unsure where to start or have lost your interest or confidence in your cooking skills and need inspiring come and talk to Wendy and David the “Cool Food Dudes” from Real Food Works at Darlington on 21st May or at Ponteland on 22nd May (where they’ll be joining in the 10th anniversary celebrations) and get some recipes for quick and simple meals. You can also get some tips about how to make your food pounds go further.

David from RFW serves a customer at his stallDavid from Real Food Works says:

“Great meals start with the best quality ingredients and buying direct is good value for money. You can find something different at Farmers' Markets and the money you spend on foods grown and produced locally goes back into the local economy as the producers employ local people and buy supplies locally where possible.

“Some produce cannot be supplied all year round. But if you buy direct from Farmers' Markets you can get in touch with the seasons.”

Alnwick (28th)

At Alnwick Farmers' Market on 28th May you can find out more about keeping a few hens:

Hens respond to the lighter days by increasing egg production so between mid March and mid October they are plentiful. If you buy eggs at a Farmers’ Market, you can ask about the type of hens and how they are kept. Now is the best time to include omelettes on the menu and with some finely chopped fresh herbs added you have a tasty fast food meal, and egg custard goes perfectly with stewed rhubarb.
